For years, experts told us marketing was a funnel: A customer sees an ad, clicks it, and buys the product. Simple, right? Unfortunately, that world is gone. Today, the path to buying is messy, chaotic, and human.
- The Problem: People don't trust ads anymore. They trust people.
- The Reality: Customers might see your brand 80 times before they actually buy.
- The Fix: Stop trying to "close the deal" instantly. Start being helpful.
- The Goal: Build an audience you own (Email), not one you rent (Instagram).
1. The "Messy Middle"
Think about how you buy something today. You see an ad on Instagram. You ignore it. A week later, a friend mentions the brand. You Google it. You read three reviews. You forget about it. Two weeks later, you get an email and finally buy.
This isn't a straight line. Google calls this the "Messy Middle." If you only focus on running ads, you lose everyone who is currently in the "researching" phase (which is most people).
2. Pick Your Battles
You don't need to be on every platform. You just need to understand what each platform is actually for.
When people have a problem, they ask Google. Your job is to be the best answer. If you answer their question well, they trust you.
Ads are like gasoline. They make things go faster, but they burn up quickly. Use ads to find new people, not to build long-term relationships.
Blogs, videos, and podcasts. This proves you know what you are talking about. It helps people decide you are the expert they want to hire.
This is your most valuable asset. Social media reach can be taken away. No one can take away your email list.
3. Don't Build on "Rented Land"
Imagine building a beautiful house on land you don't own. One day, the landlord doubles the rent or kicks you out. That is exactly what happens when you build your entire business on Facebook, TikTok, or LinkedIn.
Social Media is not yours. Algorithms change. Reach drops. Accounts get banned. Use social media to find people, but always try to move them to your Website or Email list. That is "Owned Land."
4. A Simple Checklist
You don't need a complex strategy to start. Just make sure you have these basics covered:
